What is S-SAARC?

Simulation South Asian association for regional co-operation is a student run simulation of the South Asian Association for Regional co-operation. Student delegates representing various SAARC member nations address specific issues of current interest. Through debates and negotiation student delegates attempt to resolve regional and international problems. They are expected to do this in a conciliatory manner to the fullest of their nation’s interests. Thus they learn to embrace the spirit of the SAARC charter. This is the first S-SAARC organized within the world.

What do students gain from participating in S-SAARC?

S-SAARC conferences provide students with opportunity of role playing diplomats involved in decision-making and conflict resolution at SAARC. Students not only learn about the SAARC system but also find out about economic, social and environmental issues prevailing in today’s world. Students learn to resolve these problems through negotiation and compromise. In order to do this they are expected to develop skills of independent research, oratory, resolution writing and collaboration. As students take on the role of international diplomats they have to put their own views aside and embrace the foreign policy of the nation, to which they have being assigned. Students also learn about the conduct of formal meetings and the use of parliamentary procedure. Taking part in S-SAARC is both hard work and fun!

What preparation is required?

All student are required t o participate in training workshops that are held prior to the conference. During workshops students learn to about the organization and functions of the SAARC. They learn the skills of role- play, making formal and informal speeches, writing merging and amending resolutions, negotiating and research. These skills are practiced at mini-debates, which also help students learn about the rules of parliamentary procedure.
It is essential that students do research on their assigned country and its government. Teacher advisors may guide delegates in their research and assist them in formulating a suitable foreign policy.
